Course Overview:

The Construction Skills Qualification course at Spark Futures is designed to provide learners with a comprehensive pathway into the construction industry, combining foundational to intermediate-level skills (Entry 3 to Level 2). This AEB-funded course covers key areas such as health and safety, construction techniques, tools handling, and employability skills, preparing learners for real-world construction jobs.

The course progresses from basic knowledge at Entry 3 to more advanced skills and understanding by Level 2, allowing learners to work at their own pace while building industry-relevant competencies.


Course Structure:

The course is delivered as a progressive qualification, starting from Entry 3 and advancing through to Level 2. Learners may enter at any level based on their prior experience or qualifications, but all key construction areas will be covered to ensure readiness for industry roles.

Module 1: Introduction to Construction (Entry 3)

Aim: To introduce learners to the basics of construction, covering essential skills and industry knowledge.

Topics Covered:

  1. Understanding the Construction Industry:
  • Overview of different construction roles and sectors
  • Introduction to construction terminology and processes
  1. Health and Safety Awareness:
  • Basic principles of staying safe on-site
  • Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  1. Tools and Materials:
  • Familiarization with basic tools (e.g., hammers, saws, trowels)
  • Introduction to common construction materials: wood, bricks, cement
  1. Basic Communication Skills:
  • Understanding instructions on-site
  • Teamwork and effective communication in construction environments
  1. Practical Skills Development:
  • Simple hands-on tasks: bricklaying, mixing mortar, cutting wood

Assessment:

  • Practical task demonstrations (e.g., tool usage)
  • Health and safety quiz
  • Verbal communication exercises

Module 2: Foundation Skills in Construction (Level 1)

Aim: To build on Entry 3 knowledge and introduce key skills required for construction jobs.

Topics Covered:

  • In-depth exploration of health and safety legislation (e.g., HSE regulations)
  • Safe handling of materials and tools
  1. Construction Methods and Techniques:
  • Bricklaying: laying foundations, walls, and basic structures
  • Carpentry: cutting and joining timber for framing and roofing
  • Introduction to basic plumbing and electrical tasks
  1. Construction Tools and Equipment:
  • Safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws)
  • Tool identification and selection for different tasks

  • Introduction to simple site plans and technical drawings
  • Reading and interpreting basic measurements
  1. Environmental Impact:
  • Introduction to sustainability in construction
  • Waste management and recycling on-site

Module 3: Advanced Construction Skills (Level 2)

Aim: To develop intermediate-level skills and knowledge for more advanced construction roles.

  • Advanced safety considerations: working at heights, scaffolding, electrical safety

  1. Advanced Practical Skills:
  • Bricklaying: constructing cavity walls, decorative features (e.g., arches, piers)

  • Plumbing and Electrical: installation of domestic water systems, light fittings, and switches
  1. Interpreting Technical Drawings and Plans:
  • Reading and analyzing detailed construction plans and site layouts

  • Final group project: constructing a medium-scale structure following detailed plans

Work Experience and Industry Exposure (Optional)

Aim: To provide learners with real-world experience in a construction environment.
